Today’s “Author Talk” with Daniel Barnhart… author of Messy Anne Meets the Monstrosity
What is Messy Anne “about”?
D: It’s about fun. Mostly just fun. Simple fun– the kind of safe, imaginary childlike fun that has no real risk or danger.
Is that important to you?
D: Very. I think it’s missing a lot from today’s entertainment for children. There’s a lot out there that’s considered aspirational (values and sensibilities for an older age group presented to a younger age group), and there’s a lot that is sarcastic, slick, adult tongue-in-cheek humor that I don’t want to present to that age group.
D: I just think that 3-5 year old (or 2-6 or wherever it falls) is a magic time. It’s before school and peer pressure and bullies and fads and…whatever. It seems to me the one time when you’re not being told who to be, so it’s an important time to let children be who they are.
