How can readers discover more about you?

If my publishers don’t help them find me, and my agents don’t help me find them, and my social network folks don’t help them find me then I’ll just keep writing and pass it along to my children and grandchildren.

What advice would you give aspiring writers?

First of all, understand that writing is a craft. So is painting. So is composing. Learning the craft is only accomplished by doing it. The more that you do it, the better you will get. That’s guaranteed. Don’t talk about it. Do it! The creative aspect? Who’s to say? That, I believe, can be a gift, or a lightening bolt, or serendipity.

Where do you see publishing going in the future?

When I had the good fortune to have first novel on the Internet, it gave me an insight as to where publishing might go. I held back publishing some of my novels, and reverted the rights of others back to me as soon as I could. That day arrived and I was able to bring any books out – new and previously published. Being in the music business, I watched CD’s, Napster and the Internet change how we buy and play music radically. E-books, the Internet, ipads, smart phones and Amazon came next and the publishing business and how we buy and read books changed radically. Currently Netflix, Amazon, wi-fi, streaming and broadband are changing the TV/Cable business radically and how and what programming we choose to watch. Movies are next. Soon when a film opens it will be available in your home on your large, hi-def screen, same day, on a worldwide basis. Years ago, in 1975, I wrote an essay about all of this titled, “Your Time, Your Station.” It appeared in a book, Woman in the Year 2000, that was derived from a series of documentaries I was commissioned to do by Prentiss-Hall, but was cancelled for lack of funding.

As the means of quality physical production becomes more available, and the venues and outlets of distribution become more becomes accessible, fewer and fewer middlemen and gatekeepers will remain to stand in the way of the creators. I see the future of publishing, music, TV, Cable and movies becoming more personal, ubiquitous fractionalized and accessible worldwide. In simple terms, I see a lot of people creating a lot of stuff and seeking an audience directly. As someone who faces the blank page every day, I think that’s great!

Which social network works best for you?

I leave that up to people who know far more than me about it. I’ve have to spend my time filling that blank page.

Whats the hardest thing about writing?

I don’t see it as hard. It is what I do professionally. I guess getting to the place where it is ready to find an audience – when I am completely satisfied I’ve reached that point.

Whats the easiest thing about writing?

Have the characters and circumstance that take you on an interesting, absorbing and wonderful journey.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I’m a professional. Full time. Except when I directed a film or worked with a rock ‘n roll or R&B act. And then were those trips to “Hollywood.”

Whats your favorite film and why?

Not favorite, but most memorable. Citizen Kane. It opened my eyes to cinema techniques as storytelling devices and enhancement as did some of Fellini’s and Bergman’s work.

In what format are your books available?

Paper, e-books, audio books and movies. I had the first full novel on the Internet in 1998.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

At least a year. But the pot is filling and filling until it comes to a boil and I face that blank page to begin to put all of the thoughts and notes and passion into words.

What do you think makes a good story?

A subject that interest me and draws my passion so that my readers turn pages and my audiences’s eyes stay glued to the screen

What’s your favorite book and why?

I don’t view the world that way. Favorites. There are books, movies, events and such that are memorable or moving or important. Perhaps the next book I read is the best answer for me.

Whats your favorite quote?

Again, no favorite, but there is one that is always with me. It is attributed to playwright Moss Hart, but many other writers may have said something similar – “I was there when the paper was blank.” When it comes to a normally non-collaborative art forms like novels or paintings, this is true – the page, the canvas starts out blank.. But with movies or songs, or even plays, collaboration is usually the norm and necessary. In those cases, especially in “Hollywood”, my personal experience is that an original story or screenplay by X, becomes a film by director Y or producer Z. In Europe it’s different. The writer is considered at the least a co-author of the film.

What books are you reading at the moment?

Right now I am re-reading James Mitchner’s “The Drifters.”

Do you ever get writer block?

No. Sometimes I am not satisfied with what I have written. So I do what is one of the most necessary things a writer can do. I re-write.

How do you relax?

Family, friends, fishing, my garden and changing mediums to work in from time to time..

Why do you write?

There is something about it that drives me – telling stories. Sharing thoughts. Proposing ideas. Entertaining an audience. Attempting to explore our humanity. Contemplating the future. I guess the short answer would be storyteller.

Where do your ideas come from?

An imponderable question with no simple or all-encompassing answer. An observation. A distraction. An outrageous event. A personal experience. An interesting person. An unacceptable situation. These and an awareness of who and what is around me; the joy and pain of others and my own. Ordinary people in extraordinary events.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?

Slowly. With writing, professional writing, I figured that first comes the craft. And because I told stories in so many different mediums, around a vast number of subjects, I have gathered a great deal of knowledge, techniques and experiences. Structurally and creatively, a novel is different from a screenplay is different from a libretto is different from a song is different from a documentary…ETC. And as a professional writer, for most of my life, I have written every day. So I guess I “evolve creatively” every day.

What were you like in school?

Where I grew up, in the Bronx, my friends were mostly first generation Americans whose parents and extended families never had extensive education, much less college. So school was very important in my home. A privilege. My memories are of making friends and enjoying learning. Our teachers and principals did not put up with kids who were disruptive. I was fortunate to get an excellent, free public education right through college. I also remember that I skipped two years and so entered college at the age of sixteen. It was a little tough being younger than the rest of the students in my class. I was on the varsity High School Baseball and varsity La Crosse in college.

As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?

I didn’t give that much thought. At least that’s my recollection. My brother was a High School pitcher and wanted to play big league baseball. I went to the Bronx High School of Science, one of the special NY public schools. The concentration there was science and math. I remember that at some point I thought I’d be a chemical engineer or chemist.

I entered college on that track, but discovered the City College Film Institute and that changed my world.

interview with David Saperstein, Writing

Today’s “Author Talk” with David Saperstein… author of Green Devil: The Book of Belial…

David Saperstein, author

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing fiction, novels, screenplays and librettos for thirty-seven years. Prior to that, I wrote lyrics. And prior to that, documentary, corporate, industrial, training and propaganda films and live shows.

What genre are your books?

No specific genre. I decided that I did not want to write the same book over and over, as many genre authors do.   I write what interests me. The range has gone from science fiction to fantasy to police procedural to Christmas stories… My screenplays have even wider range of subject matter and include the above plus comedy, drama, politics, religion… My TV shows have spanned sports, ballet, rodeo, children’s episodic series… My documentary subjects, from steel mills to cattle ranches to coal mines to the White House and internationally from Sweden to Japan and beyond…

What I do is tell stories in whatever genre or medium best relates them.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written fifteen novels. Eleven have been published. No favorites. Different genres. That’s like asking which of your children do you like the best.

They each took a year or more to birth. They each brought me pleasure and satisfaction in their own way. My joy is in the day that I know they are finished.
